Simulation-based learning for health training

The use of educational video games in medical training has proven to be an innovative and effective strategy to improve learning and knowledge retention. Game-Based Learning (GBL) allows students to face real clinical situations in simulated environments, which helps them develop practical decision-making skills without putting patient safety at risk. This approach encourages repetitive practice, real-time problem-solving, and experiential learning, key factors for the training of highly skilled health professionals.

This type of tool allows for significant cost savings in clinical training. The digitization of practices reduces the need for costly physical infrastructures and disposable clinical material, offering a sustainable and scalable alternative for universities and healthcare institutions. For teachers, it facilitates the monitoring of student progress through objective data, standardizes teaching, and allows for the personalization of learning based on individual performance.

Compass Digital leads the development of educational video games for clinical training

From Compass Digital, we have carried out an innovative digitization project in the field of clinical training, with the development of educational video games aimed at simulating medical practices. This service, funded within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, aims to improve the acquisition of skills by Health Sciences students through a highly technical and gamified virtual environment.

In this project, we have combined our deep functional knowledge in the healthcare sector with our expertise in the development of virtual simulation environments. Thanks to our experience, we have designed interactive tools that transform the way future healthcare professionals learn and prepare for the real world

Clinical video games to improve training

Compass Digital has developed different video games that include the simulation of clinical cases such as asthma, hemorrhagic shock, coma, acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), advanced life support (ALS) with defibrillable and non-defibrillable rhythm, eclampsia, as well as the development of a SCORM package generator for the integration of the results obtained by the students in the learning management system (LMS) of the UCM.

Each video game is designed to provide an experiential learning experience, allowing students to practice the diagnosis, treatment, and management of complications in a safe and risk-free environment.

Benefits of simulation-based learning

Gamification in medical education has proven to be a highly effective tool to improve knowledge retention and student confidence in clinical decision-making. Thanks to these video games, students will be able to face critical situations in a controlled environment, perfecting their skills and reducing the error rate in the management of real cases.

Among the main benefits of the project are:

  • Improvement in the clinical competence of health professionals.
  • Increase in the confidence and practical skills of students.
  • Reduction of errors in clinical care, thanks to prior practice in virtual environments.
  • Adaptation of content to the latest clinical guidelines and studies, ensuring up-to-date training.

At Compass Digital, we believe that technology can play a crucial role in healthcare training, and this project is a reflection of our commitment to innovation. Our team of experts has worked closely with healthcare specialists to ensure that each simulation faithfully reflects real clinical challenges.

Development of mental health solutions

Development of mental health solutions

Client: Healthcare Sector

Solution: Personal Recovery Plan (PRP)

Objective: Optimize the management and monitoring of the rehabilitation of patients with Severe Mental Disorder (SMD).

As part of Compass Digital’s track record in Healthcare projects, we have led the development and improvement of innovative digital platforms aimed at supporting rehabilitation and recovery in the field of mental health. One of the standout projects in our portfolio has been the implementation and optimization of an advanced technological tool: the Personal Recovery Plan (PRP).

Project Context

The Personal Recovery Plan was designed to provide a comprehensive system that facilitates collaboration between health and social professionals, as well as entities specializing in the rehabilitation of people with Severe Mental Disorder (SMD). This project arises as a response to the need to structure and organize patient information through recovery episodes, promoting a person-centered approach and their clinical evolution.

Key Functionalities:

The implemented solution is characterized by:

  1. Episode-Based Management: Restructuring of the system to organize information based on recovery episodes rather than patients. This allows for more precise management of individual recovery journeys and multiple entries and exits from the system.
  2. Integration with the Electronic Health Record (EHR): Synchronization with existing forms and records, ensuring full interoperability between the application and other healthcare systems.
  3. Customization of Roles and Permissions: Implementation of a role system (administrators, coordinators, technicians, among others) that ensures differentiated and secure access based on each user’s responsibilities.
  4. Waiting List Management: Creation of specific lists by resources and episodes, with advanced filtering, assignment, and exclusion options.
  5. Optimization of Data Visualization: Improvement in the presentation of information through intuitive views, tabs organized by functional areas (assessment, planning, evaluation, etc.), and interactive graphs that facilitate the tracking of active and closed episodes.
  6. Information Extraction and Analysis: Implementation of tools for generating reports and statistical analysis of relevant data, such as activities performed, patient status, and progress evaluations.

Technical Benefits:

Efficiency: Episode-based restructuring reduces data redundancy and improves system responsiveness.

Scalability: Modular design allows for future expansions and customizations according to service needs.

Security: Incorporation of advanced sensitive data protection standards, complying with confidentiality and personal data protection regulations.

Work Methodology:

Our approach was based on agile methodologies, ensuring the delivery of iterative and quality results. During the project, the following were carried out:

Analysis and design phases: Identification of specific requirements and creation of prototypes.

Technical implementation: Development of new functionalities in the model, view, and controller layers, as well as updating the database.

Exhaustive testing: Functional and security validation in controlled environments before deployment in production.

Results Obtained:

The new PPR system has transformed the way personal recovery plans are managed. Among the most outstanding achievements are:

  • Increased accuracy and traceability of clinical data.
  • Reduction in response times in patient care.
  • Improved coordination between multidisciplinary teams.
  • Greater satisfaction of professionals and patients thanks to a more intuitive system adapted to their needs.

With this experience, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation in the mental health sector, contributing to the improvement of services and the well-being of people.
